Canards, Folded Nodes, and Mixed-Mode Oscillations in Piecewise-Linear Slow-Fast Systems

چکیده
Canard-induced phenomena have been extensively studied in the last three decades, both from the mathematical and from the application viewpoints. Canards in slow-fast systems with (at least) two slow variables, especially near folded-node singularities, give an essential generating mechanism for Mixed-Mode oscillations (MMOs) in the framework of smooth multiple timescale systems. There is a wealth of literature on such slow-fast dynamical systems and many models displaying canard-induced MMOs, in particular in neuroscience. In parallel, since the late 1990s several papers have shown that the canard phenomenon can be faithfully reproduced with piecewise-linear (PWL) systems in two dimensions although very few results are available in the three-dimensional case. The present paper aims to bridge this gap by analysing canonical PWL systems that display folded singularities, primary and secondary canards, with a similar control of the maximal winding number as in the smooth case. We also show that the singular phase portraits are compatible in both frameworks. Finally, we show on an example how to construct a (linear) global return and obtain robust PWL MMOs.

The Geometry of Slow Manifolds near a Folded Node
This paper is concerned with the geometry of slow manifolds of a dynamical system with two slow and one fast variable. Specifically, we study the dynamics near a folded node singularity, which is known to give rise to so-called canard solutions. Geometrically, canards are intersection curves of two-dimensional attracting and repelling slow manifolds, and they are a key element of slow-fast dyna...
متن کاملEquivalence between the ‘two-fold’ singularity of nonsmooth flows and the ‘folded’ singularity of slow-fast flows
The two-fold singularity has played a significant role in our understanding of uniqueness and stability in piecewise smooth dynamical systems. When a vector field is discontinuous at some hypersurface, it can become tangent to that surface from one side or the other, and tangency from both sides creates a two-fold singularity. The flow this creates bears a superficial resemblance to so-called f...

متن کاملMixed-mode bursting oscillations: dynamics created by a slow passage through spike-adding canard explosion in a square-wave burster.
This article concerns the phenomenon of Mixed-Mode Bursting Oscillations (MMBOs). These are solutions of fast-slow systems of ordinary differential equations that exhibit both small-amplitude oscillations (SAOs) and bursts consisting of one or multiple large-amplitude oscillations (LAOs). The name MMBO is given in analogy to Mixed-Mode Oscillations, which consist of alternating SAOs and LAOs, w...
متن کاملReturn maps of folded nodes and folded saddle-nodes.
Folded nodes occur in generic slow-fast dynamical systems with two slow variables. Open regions of initial conditions flow into a folded node in an open set of such systems, so folded nodes are an important feature of generic slow-fast systems. Twisting and linking of trajectories in the vicinity of a folded node have been studied previously, but their consequences for global dynamical behavior...
